At the prices they are asking I’d expect better crossover components. I was surprised to find Samwha caps taking a perve inside. I’ve been following Wilson Benesch since about 2011 and have purchased several of their speakers. Used Mark 2 ATC 40 sell for around $4k and very sort after. The tweeter unit is also very detailed and high quality and the sealed bass for smaller woofer is very punchy and extended enough, the whole package from top to bottom is excellent. That fabric dome midrange with semi horn flare after 30+ years and improvements since then is still one of the best mids around, very musical detailed, images very well and doesn’t tare your head off at high volumes like some others do. I heard it alongside some older larger ATC and it was a lot more suited to that room (4圆m) where as the bigger one was very unbalanced and bottom heavy sound though in a larger room would shine. Great decision to go with the ATC 40, it seems to be a good room match with medium to smaller rooms, and not overpower rooms. I think the 100 actives are closer to $35k now, four times as good as the passive 40's - not a hope but nothing ever is. Although I don't have the room I would like to have a second system with a a pair of passive ATC speakers, a simple integrated and a source.ĭefinitely diminishing returns on jumping up the range, as with anything. Of all the speakers I've owned over the years the ones I would buy back would be my old passive 40's and one of the two pairs of SCM10's I owned but sold off to finance some other hair brained hifi venture. I've kept up with your Sansui adventures and did wonder how some of those beautiful Japananese creations would go on some ATC's. (those numbers are guesses by the way, I haven't checked up on the price of the ATC SCM 100s)Īlso, I can't use a Sansui amp with active speakers, and I really need to be able to use a Sansui every now and then. Lucky me, I prefer $9500 speakers to $25000 speakers. as much as the active SCM 100's sound very, very good (and they do) there is something about the passive SCM 40's (and actives too for that matter, although my preference for passives has already been stated) that just works for me. Price wise new the active/c1 was cheaper than the passive/SIA150 combo. Doge 8 was not a great match, ME24/Benchmark Dac2 and Atc C1 very good. They did take a while to run in and need to be partnered with a low impedance output preamp. I will say that new out of the box the passives were great, the actives were just plain awful. I wouldn’t say the passives were warmer in my system, it was like the actives were slightly more defined, better bottom end, bigger soundstage, just more ATC goodness. Ultimately the actives did everything the passives did, just better. Seeing I had the actives a flick of the switch away it was an ever present temptation to jump from one to the other. I always loved the passives, they did everything right. I only owned the Primare and ME240, the rest were loaners. Of all these the ATC was probably the best match for the passives. I had used a variety of power amps with the passives including a Primare A32 250 wpc class a/b, ME 240/850/1500 and a $22000 Moon. I had both at the same time, the passives powered by an ATC SIA150 integrated and the active front end an ATC C1 preamp. Is there much difference in sound bt the ATC passive & active versions? That was probably the best amp I had on my passive 40’s out of quite a few different choices. You’ll need to buy that ATC integrated back. I've ordered a pair of SCM40 passives (which will take several months to show up I am told) so at some time in the later half of the year I will be able to compare these two speakers side by side. I personally feel that the WB sounds cleaner but not always in a good way while the ATC sounds a little more full and has that very nice, almost enveloping, mid range performance. While both speaker companies are English and both make their own drivers WB seems to put a great deal of weight into the design and construction of the box (using aluminium and carbon fibre which really jacks up the construction and materials price) while ATC are quite happy to continue using MDF (which should mean their construction costs would be similar to most other speaker companies out there). I also have a pair of the WB Discovery stand mounts (series 1) and like them quite a bit too. I too have heard the ATC SCM40 speakers and really enjoyed them.
